Learn How to Make Your Home FEEL Like – HOME!

feel good about your home

Are you ready to make your home FEEL like YOU?

Measuring your projects success…and how to do it every time.

Let’s continue on our path to a successful project using The 4 BEST Interior Design Tools…EVER! (If you don’t already have it, pick up your copy at the end of this article.)

If you’ll recall, the first tool was about the GOAL and how three words…beauty, function, and safety… measure the success of your ‘new’ space every time. You can read it by going here.

Next, we used a client’s master bath remodel to show how FUNCTION can be seamlessly meshed with beauty. Feel free to access it here.

Now we come to the heart of why you’re making a change and what you want to accomplish. Since feelings are the driving force in every design project, here’s our third question…

How do you want it to “FEEL”?

Or more specifically…

  • What would make you feel happy and productive?
  • What makes you feel welcome and comfortable and accomplish what you want or need?
  • How about your family members, what are their feelings?
  • What do you want your home to say about your style, taste and personality?

I help my clients by suggesting words to express what they want. Check out this list to start:

Happy           Joyful             Clam               Easy-going          Nurturing

Cozy           Cheerful           Colorful           Sleek               Family-oriented

Casual          Luxurious       Elegant           Formal              Pet-Friendly

Playful         Funky              Fun                 Kid-Friendly

Often I find it takes more than one word to express their dream and why they want to do it.

Here’s a few examples of clients who adapted their homes to their specific needs. By taking the time to explore their feelings together, we achieved everything they desired.

First, I helped a woman whose husband had to go into assisted living (he has Alzheimer’s).  No longer needing the large home they’d shared together, she downsized to a smaller home. She needed a sanctuary to go to after long days at the facility…yet wanted to honor his memory and their life together.

Since gray is ‘in’, she assumed some combination of grays would be the way to update her home. Problem was…she wasn’t sure she’d like it.

As we explored her goals and how she wanted her new space to make her feel, I asked her to show me something with colors that she’s always loved. It could be anything – a picture, a piece of furniture, any object that ‘spoke’ to her.

She pulled out an orange/blue/yellow/and green set of bed sheets – kept since the 70’s because they’d always made her smile. It was a pleasure to use these to design a color palette for the rest of the house; and gave her the confidence to move ahead with the change.

Her days at the facility are long. But when she comes home, she’s surrounded by the colors she loves, and feels like she gets a hug every time she walks through the door.

Next, a family hired me to redesign the master bath of their father’s historic home. He’s a retired CEO of a Fortune 500 company and an outdoorsman who still loves to travel. He’d lived in the home for  years with his beloved wife who had passed away. He didn’t want to move.

Concerned for his safety, his daughters saw a need to remodel. While style and décor weren’t crucial to him, he still appreciated quality and good taste. We looked at family pictures taken in the home while his wife was still alive. Using these, I blended function with her taste.

His ‘new space’ continues to feel like the home he’d always known and loved and with a mother who lived to 105, he expects to stay there a long time.

Our last example is a practical client who loves gardening and wanted a bright, cheerful, and happy garden room…without purchasing new furniture. To give her the room that created this atmosphere, all we had to do was purchase accessories that were casual, colorful, and fun.

Now her room’s truly a reflection of her and she loves to show it to her guests!

All these clients had one thing in common. Each cherished his or her homes and how it made them feel. They wanted and needed to make changes, but were uncertain as to how to go about it.

That’s why they called me.

And here’s what I love most about my job. I get the best ideas from my clients. Part of it comes from using the 4 BEST Interior Design Tools…EVER!  I ask lots of questions so we can explore what the projects are about and why they want to do it. They guide me (usually without realizing it!) to the result that truly fulfills their desires.

Our homes are one of our biggest investments. As you can see, design matters. It makes you happy, reminds you of a loved-one or a favorite hobby, and transforms your home into your perfect retreat.
