Do you think about growing old and if so, what scares you the most?
A few weeks ago, I sent an email to my contacts asking the question “What’s your biggest fear about growing old?”
The response was tremendous and I thank everyone who took the time to answer. The results may surprise you…as they did me.
After studying the feedback, I broke it into seven basic categories…
40% – Loss of Independence – by far the biggest concern. Individual answers included:
- Not being able to do things for myself.
- Giving up driving.
- Losing the privilege of living on my own.
- Becoming a burden on my family or children.
- Not being able to care for myself in my own home.
23% – Finances
- Outliving my money.
- Not having the funds to pay for the care I need, medical or non- medical.
23% – Health
- Getting sick or just having my health deteriorate.
- Will it physically hurt to get old? (Good Question!)
- Deteriorating health and general health issues.
- Falling.
8% – Alzheimer’s or Dementia
8% – Being on my own
5% – Losing a loved one due to death
1% – Unique Responses
- Being unable to finish business or personal goals.
- Not being needed any more.
So why ask the question?
As a specialist in Aging In Place, it’s important to know what people fear about aging. My goal is to offer resource guides and information that’s TRULY useful.
I can’t solve all the issues listed above, but I help people maintain their independence. This, in turn, contributes to better health and finances.
