Designer Image – Why Many Have the Wrong Picture

What was I Thinking?

Designer Image – Why Many Have the Wrong Picture

It always surprises me to learn how many people feel intimidated by designers.  They seemed to think we have a mystique…an ‘eye’…giving us the ability to coordinate rooms from ceiling to floor…

…and we’re the ones in charge.

I think Hollywood may have contributed to the stereotype of the imperious know-it-all who tells the client what needs to be done. Toss out the comfortable sofa, favorite cabinets, and TV chair with ragged edges. Replace them with sleek, modern pieces, a retro look, or the current trend in design where ‘everything matches’.

If this, or something similar, reflects your vision of interior designers, you need to read on to see how mistaken that image may be.

How I Surprise My Clients – to Their Delight

The most fun aspect of my work — is bringing out the artist in my clients. Talent they didn’t know existed. Some aren’t surprised.  Others are amazed. The revelations dawn before the project begins.

In my next newsletter, I’ll detail the steps I take before signing a contract. (The most important phase of any project.)

But for now, let’s talk about what happens when the project is just an idea.

I spend a lot of time with my clients. We discuss what needs to be done, and why. I have questionnaires for them to fill out…and talk about the answers they give. It’s not tedious…in fact it’s fun.

As clients think through their answers, they don’t realize how much information they give me — their feelings, goals…how they want to live. Things like…

  • Why they want to keep certain pieces.
  • How the rooms feel too small…or too big.
  • How inconvenient it is to prepare a meal.
  • How far they stretch to get a bathroom towel.

Sounds like a lot? Believe me…it isn’t. There’s nothing more frustrating than realizing the closet door now bangs against a dresser. Or you have to adjust your stance to load laundry. Or tall people bang their heads on a lampshade.

Remodels aren’t just about updating looks…they’re about updating life styles.

Once my clients see the vision, it transforms their faces as they design the end result.

The Power of Teamwork

People hire me for my expertise in beauty, function and safety.  My education and experience arm my clients with the tools to express the environment they desire. Even when a client tells me to take charge, or handle a certain aspect, we work as a team to define the purpose of each change.

Here’s the perfect summary of my approach…

The way I design is always influenced by my client’s individuality. When I design a space…whether it’s a room, or an entire home…our relationship grows through a shared purpose. Yes, I guide the design…but their lead takes us to the end result.

On my website, www.DesignForaLifeSpan.com, you’ll find pictures (under the “Project Gallery” Tab) of projects  my clients and I have accomplished together. I’d love to have you stop in and browse.

Live easy,

Jeanette
