How to “Age In Place” – Even if Your Home is OLD

Aging In Place / Universal Design Home Assessment

Heading to Big Sky Country…

How?  By following this family’s example.

So, I’m off to Montana this week (which I’m super excited about) to help a family achieve their father’s goals. He has two that are important to him. To fish as often as he can…and…to live in his historic (old) home until he says “it’s time to move on”.

They’re a pro-active family that have considered and studied the impact aging will have on dad.  They’ve even made some Aging In Place chances, such as installing an elevator.  Which will make getting to his upstairs bedroom easy if he can’t use the stairs.

I’ve been called in to do an Aging in Place / Universal Design Home Assessment.  We have a comprehensive checklist that I’ll use as we walk the property.  We’ll assess areas such as the; Exterior, Entry, Overall floor plan, Hallways, Windows, Garage, Kitchen, Bathrooms, Storage, Lighting, Flooring, etc.  This will let us know which areas of the home needs improvement.  Here’s a sampling of what we’ll be reviewing:

  • Is the exterior of the home low-maintenance
  • Is there an accessible path of travel to the home
  • Non-slip flooring in the foyer
  • Are the interior & exterior thresholds flush
  • Is the main living on a single story, including full bath & bathroom
  • Are hallways a minimum of 36″ wide
  • Is there levered door hardware throughout the home
  • Is the flooring smooth, non-glare, slip-resistant surfaces
  • Are the kitchen appliances control easy to read
  • There are many, many more…

Once we’ve complete this process, we’ll sit down and review our findings. This will help us determine what course of actions we’ll take to ensure dad will have the home he seeks..one that’s safe, comfortable, functional and beautiful.  The beautiful thing about this Age In Place Home Assessment is the power it gives this family…along with the peace of mind it offers.

If you’d like to know about about our Universal Design / Age in Place Home Assessment… let’s talk.

Live Easy,

~Jeanette
