A Simple Approach to Letting Go

Make a choice…toss it, keep it, or donate it.

Interior Designer Jeanette Knudsen has invited me to create blog posts around her beautiful graphics, which will feature a series of organizing tips over the next few months. Visit her website at www.designforalife.yourmarketingcoachonline.com for more tips and great design ideas from this amazing designer. Her company, Design for a Lifespan specializes in redesigning and remodeling projects to help the senior population “age in place.” Call 480-695-1360 for more information.

The TKO Approach is the clever organizing method developed by celebrity professional organizer and television host Peter Walsh:

T – Toss out
K – Keep
O – Out the door

Sounds easy enough but this process can be difficult for a lot of people who struggle with letting go. My approach is a little different because the first questions I ask are:

Do you love it?
Do you use it?
Does it still serve you well?
Can it serve others better?

Once these questions are answered, we then easily transition into Walsh’s TKO Approach. Here are some examples in each category that you may find helpful.

T – Toss Out (garbage, recyclers, shred)

Broken items including toys, appliances, dishes, electronics
Worn out shoes
Worn out clothes
Outdated, stale, or rancid food
Stained linens and pillows (note: many donation locations will no longer accept any bedding due to the bed bugs epidemic)
Redundant or obsolete files and paperwork

K – Keep (stays in your space)

Things you love
Things you use
Things that have a designated place in your home/office
Paperwork that relates to tax returns (contact your tax preparer for your particular guidelines)
Important documents (passports, insurance policies, birth certificates, death certificates, purchase contracts, vehicle titles, etc).

O – Out the Door – (donations, giving to family/friends)

Clothes that are in good condition that no longer fit or you do not wear
Furniture
Paper/office supplies
Electronics
Household gadgets
Toys
Sports equipment
